Celebrating Our 10th Anniversary in August!

Category:Articles By Dee Owens,Personalized Marketing,Personalized Marketing Inc,PM Inc,Real Marketing for Organic Growth Tags :

Sorry so late with the blog… We have been working hard to bring you the new site version of Personalized Marketing Inc, which I am happy to say launches August 1st! I have also returned to school to obtain my Masters in Business with a certification in Marketing, it’s been a great experience so far.

Today’s topic … Websites!

I know I recently did an article series not long ago that mentioned websites in them, however, with us launching our new design and some bumps along the road, it seems pertinent. Websites require reliable hosting, they require access to dedicated servers, they most generally use a database and often have areas where security is a must; which if you do not have an SSL you could find yourself falling in the rankings!

Cindy and I built Personalized Marketing Inc’s new site on the content management platform (CMS) WordPress, so we have all of those needs mentioned before and sometimes additional headaches. If you have ever used WordPress then you know of plugins, which are great when they work but when they do not it can be a headache. Plugins, unless you make them, are generally taken care of via third party, if a core update conflict with the plugin, it can and will stop working right. If that happens then your entire site will come down. Recently, I have noticed several plugins that worked beautifully for years stop working correctly or adding unnecessary id tags. The cleaner your website code the better it works.

WordPress generally sends out an update at least once a month and lately several times a month. Turning on Auto Updates in your hosting is an option for keeping the site updated, however, if you have one of those pesky “non-compatible” moments you just found yourself with that headache we mentioned. Which can and has brought websites completely down and if you rely on that site for your business, well you now have a bigger problem. So, if you are not willing to pay to have someone go in and care for your website, then you have to learn to do it yourself. What is your time worth?

Our Anniversary!

It is hard for me to imagine that Personalized Marketing Inc is 10 years old… It does not seem like that much time has come to pass. In the past 10 years, we have had many changes but one thing never will, we are a transparent company that is focused on providing customized services based on the client’s needs and wants. We are a Faith based company that cares about the people we work with and we want to help them thrive by providing the best service we can.

We mark the birthday of the company each year in August for two main reasons: one it is my birthday month and two because I like giving gifts during my birthday month! Normally, I run one discount special all month long, however, this year we are going to be giving out multiple gifts to celebrate. We are also going to draw one special surprise during the month as well. So if you haven’t already signed up to receive our newsletter, if you are not following the blog, or maybe you have not connected with us on Social Media, August 1st is the day to start!

WOW! We’ve done it!

1 Year Blogs and The Time Has Come…

Sorry I am a week late, we had storms come through and we focused on client items and the blog was put off a week…

When I sat down to write this week’s blog post, the calendar kept nagging at me, and the topic made me stop and think of how many blogs we’ve written. I have to say it caught me off guard that we have been doing the “Real Marketing For Organic Growth” blogs for a year!

Happy 4th from Personalized Marketing Inc

Today’s Topic – Review

Since we are celebrating a year of “Real Marketing For Organic Growth” and we are halfway through 2018, I thought it was time to review some of the basics…

  1. Collect your stats from ALL your networks and sites
    1. Compare them to previous months
    2. Compare them to last year
  2. Review your stats from your networks
    1. Are you on track?
    2. Are you posting when your followers are online?
    3. Are you keeping your content relevant?
    4. Are you being informative but also interesting?
    5. Keeping the “soapboxes” to the minimum?
  3. Are you using a marketing tool yet? If not, are you keeping records of your post?
    1. Twitter, Facebook and other social networks have a way for you to download your post. You can also collect statistics on the post from the sites as well. If you haven’t already done it then you need too soon.
    2. Having copies of your post can help you to determine if you are posting relevant content.
    3. A record of the topics you’ve covered.
    4. If you are using a Marketing Tool, then it most likely has a way for you to export what you’ve sent out. A good Marketing Tool will also help you determine when the viewers are online and let you know the interactions of the post you’ve made.

ARE YOU PLANNING FOR YOUR END OF THE YEAR EVENTS?

If you remember in some of our earlier post, #3 and #5, we discussed how life happens and planning only what you are willing to commit too is essential? Well, July marks the begging of the end of the year rush, recently kicking it off with Canada Day on July 1st or Independence Day on July 4th, depending on where you live. Then we generally have fairs in July or early August. August also marks school starting back up. September also marks several holidays including Labor Day, first Monday of the month, this year on September 3rd. Then follows October, November and December … which we all know what holidays are in those months and the goals we hope to set.

So have you begun planning your end of the year events yet or are you going to wait until the very last moment and try to cram it all in at once.

In the past year, I hope that you have learned about how to do marketing around your schedule. Realized when you needed help and asked for it. Took time to take stock in what is important to you. Learned some of the basics of marketing and even increased your own over time.

However, the time has come to adjust the Real Marketing For Organic Growth blog series. We are going to open up our blogging topics to include other important areas of your online presence, such as privacy, social media changes, and current happenings found online. (Such as the Web Presence Mini-Series) We are also working on the Real Marketing For Organic Growth Workbook and will be sending out those important updates to our newsletter subscribers.

Real Marketing For Organic Growth PT 23

Are You Branded?

Hi, well I am a week late with this week’s blog post however a lot has been happening lately. First, my youngest turned 18 which is both amazing but also a tug at the mother’s heart strings. I am very proud of her and know that she will do great things in life. Another thing that has been taking place is a new look for Personalized Marketing Inc, which means we have to work on our branded images and ensure that the change takes place well. So that is the topic for today’s post.

But First… Some GDPR Tips

We were asked to discuss the GDPR some and so originally we were going to go a little more in-depth over it. However, there are already some great posts out there about it (including the ones from your newsletter program) so how about a few tips instead.

  1. Make sure that you are sending the “Please resign or confirm email” to only those you have too. I have received many of these types of emails and I am not affected by the changes taking place. That being said I am not receiving the same amount of newsletters as before.
  2. If you are going to send out the request then make sure you give the person a reason to stay with you. Remind them of the benefits behind getting your emails. Also, please do not make the subject line “Will you resign up?” this immediately indicates that there is a reason they should not.
  3. Use the tools included in your newsletter provider. Many such as the Email Campaign provided through Zoho have features in them that help with your newsletters’ success. Such as scheduling them when the person receiving the emails are more likely to be around. Also, sharing them on your social media networks, just not for the GDPR email.
  4. Include your branding in the email; it is coming from you so it should look like it. Headers, logos, banners, any image really that shows the viewer immediately who they are getting an email from.
  5. Remember that newsletters and emails are not a one-way communication tool; they are designed to encourage a conversation. Let them. You can ask viewers what they like to see, you can add polls, and you could even do a Q&A session. Something that talks about you but also gives them a chance to respond.
  6. Most likely however the emails have gone out and you did not get the responses you were hoping for, now what? Save the list check them out and make sure they are not already on a different list. Good email programs will help sort them for you.
  7. Finally, if you are offering a special for those who did sign up, double opt-in and even said yes to your GDPR email, then thank them and make sure they got their gift. Many times you will find that the “gift” was not claimed so check and see if they did. You offered them something for signing up, help to ensure they get it.

Now On To Branding!

Have you ever heard the story about how a certain drink lost a lot of sales because they changed their logo? It happened a little over 15 years ago and the drop was drastic. If you have done your work and have good branding changing the logo might not be the best bet. However, if you are like PM Inc, then it might be necessary. We are going with not just a new look but also a new website design. This is mainly because we want to not only meet current website design guidelines but also because we are celebrating our 10th anniversary this summer and it was time.

So what to do now that you are revamping everything?!?

  1. Don’t panic. You have already determined this is necessary for you and your business. So you have gone over the pros and cons behind the change.
  2. If you do not already have one, make a plan outlining the steps of the change.
  3. Make sure that you not only have your new branding images but also your old ones. If possible plan transitions affects converting over to the new look by changing small elements along the way. If however like us, then consider doing a before and after. You cannot put an animated image on your logo for social networks so plan out post showing the transition. Not only is this a good marketing idea for creating eye-catching graphics but also a great way to get the change across.
  4. Stay on track with your new look. Set a completion date, set a marketing push date and stay with it. You have already done the homework of when is the best time to start the process, so use that timeline.
  5. Plan on a few post of why you are making the change and talk about it before it happens. When you launch a new product you talk about it before it actually comes out, your website or branding should get the same attention.

Notice how I mentioned website? Well as I commented earlier we are doing some drastic changes to our website. We have a new color scheme coming, new images and even different layouts for the pages. Each one of the images we are using has several layers to it, this is great if we wanted to show an animated transition from the old to new look. Now, you cannot see this just yet, we are building it on a back site. This way we have time to make the changes we want without trying to rush everything. We are however using the same server system so that will help. (Also, just for our valued readers, we are including a sneak peak of our new homepage look)

PMInc new look | Personalized Marketing Inc

When building a new site, working on new branding, making larger changes to your site, if you can do them where viewers do not accidently see the mess. Gone are the days of “Excuse our mess, while we make something new.” If your hosting company or website platform does not offer these advantages contact us. We can not only help you with your changes but also send you to a hosting company that can accommodate you.

That’s all for today’s post… Whew right? As always everything we talk about on our blog we not only have expertise in but often implement them ourselves.

Be Thankful

Seems like it’s been a while since I posted an article focused on marketing and with Memorial Day right around the corner, this will not be your traditional post. Personalized Marketing Inc and I want to thank all those that serve to keep us free. However, we want to send out a special thank you to those men and women, their families and friends who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

When we look at the jobs we have or the careers we have followed, we can get overwhelmed or may have forgotten how we got there. We may even forget those that gave us the chance to do exactly what we are right at this moment. So today’s post was going to be about the GDPR notices you might be sending out or getting in your inbox but instead, it is about saying thank you.

Spend some time this weekend and thank those that support you and your choices. Thank the family members (children, spouses, relatives, and friends) that despite everything stand behind you. They are the reason you are continuing down the path you have taken. Despite the “rough” days, the highs and lows, potential financial cost, they continue to stand beside you. They give up their time and emotions to support yours.

Thank your readers for taking time out to accept your “updated” newsletter confirmations you have been sending out to remain compliant. Say thank you to those who open your emails when you send them. Take a moment and send a personal “I would not be here without you” message to each person through it all is still behind you. It does not matter the method you chose to send out your messages just take a few minutes to remember those that support you.

Thank You

I want to personally send out a thank you to God, my children, my family, my friends and our clients. If it was not for each of you, I would not be sitting here writing this post.  A Special Thank You to the men and women who have given all and their families who sacrificed someone very special to them so that we can have the liberties we do.

Real Marketing For Organic Growth PT 21 – Web Presence 4

Your Web Presence Series #4

This is the final blog for our four part series written to help give you some basics for not just being safe online but also to ensure that your web presence is what you want it to be. In our previous post we covered security measures (Series #1) for your website, hosting options (Series #2), and your website (Series #3) itself.

In this post we are going to go over social media networks and blogs. These are more marketing focused but also include some SEO concerns as well.

Real Marketing For Organic Growth PT 21 – Your Web Presence Series #4

Social Media Networks | Blogs

Social Media Networks and Blogs, even those these are two different creatures they have the same essential function, drive traffic to where you are pointing people. They also need to look like or have the same branding as your primary location. They should be integrated into your primary location. They are a part of your overall web presence and need to be updated and monitored accordingly.

Your Facebook page has several features that you may not have noticed yet, such as Newsletter integration, shop capabilities outside of the Facebook Shop, even a way to communicate with current and new readers. Host events and plan parties that you can invite others to attend. Share your social calendar with others while adding some personal items to give your fans and future readers the chance to get to know you. If your social network does not at least resemble your website, does not engage your readers and isn’t a place that encourages interactions then you are missing the mark, especially with Facebook. Gone are the days of just posting advertisements, you cannot have a bland automated social network any longer.

Blogs

Blogs should be on your website but you should also be copying them to Blogger. Why?

Ultimately, because Google owns Blogger, Google promotes what it owns and we all want listed on the #1 Search Engine. Blogger is also a good way to keep a live running back-up of your site’s blog. You can choose to duplicate your site on your blogger, give it different content than your site, or just have a navigation that links to your site’s pages. I personally prefer a mix-up, links in the navigation that lead back to PM Inc but also content that is just for the blogger itself. Gives a little bit more of some SEO opportunities and gives the viewers some additional information. Back when we hosted Blog Hops, Blogger was our primary site for it, we also have opportunities for advertisement on the blogger site that is not available on our primary blog.

Real Marketing For Organic Growth PT 21 – Your Web Presence Series #4 | Social Icons

Newsletters | Landing Pages

Finally, we are going to discuss newsletters a little. Newsletters are a great way to share with others about events happening. These things can be anything going on in your writing career, what you did last week in your garden, or even maybe a favorite desert. Newsletters are a way to communicate with a large or even small audience without having to send out individual emails, or doing mass emailing (which can get you marked as spam). Newsletters should reflect not only the person or site (author or books) but also what the topic of the email is going to be about. It should also be no longer than an average blog post (this one not counted). People are busy, emails should get right to the point, and newsletters have to make their point quickly and in a way that encourages people to read more.

Opening the newsletter a viewer should see ‘Who’ the Site Title / Image / Logo, the ‘What’ Title of the Newsletter, ‘Why’ Description or why the newsletter is important. ‘When’ If there is a time limit or event happening. ‘Where’ the location of where they find out more information. ‘How’ content relevant to the topic. As you can see a newsletter should answer the same 5 questions a website has, a newsletter is a single page of information condensed to taking the readers to the various destinations intended. When creating the content for your next newsletter or even a landing page, keep those 5 questions in mind.

Landing Pages

I mention landing pages at the end because they are different than a website page and a newsletter but are also a combination of them. Landing pages are a mini version of your website with a singular event in mind. They are like a newsletter because they are condensed and focused on a particular topic but are not constrained by the same amount of detail a newsletter has. Landing pages are simply put an ad, very similar to those in papers and magazines, that have one job function, engage the viewers to complete the call-to-action

Newsletters, Landing Pages and Websites should all have the branding for a particular author/brand/series added. You have to have a continual visual image that no matter what you are writing about it can carry through to your next venture.

I know we have given you quite a lot of content to read and several things to consider. We are here to help; we have several service packages that are tailored to what YOU the client needs based on YOU alone.

Your Web Presence Series #3

Continuing the four part blog series to help give you some basics for not just being safe online but also to ensure that your web presence is what you want it to be.

Hope you are having a good day and not completely overwhelmed by the information provided in our previous posts “Real Marketing For Organic Growth PT 21 – Time To Discuss Your Web Presence Part 1 Section 1 and 2” We are trying to make these blogs informative but not overwhelming, so if you are feeling a bit frazzled remember to take a breath and if need to give us a shout out.

So let’s recap our previous posts we covered security and choosing the right web hosting for your needs. They covered a comparison of hosting options, basic requirements for hosting accounts (SSL, Emails) and benefits behind some of these additional Security add-ons (Firewalls and CDN). In this installment we are going to talk about other website and some common concerns.

Web Design

Web Design, Personalized Marketing Inc, Real Marketing For Organic Growth PT 21 - Web Presence 3

This one seems like a no brainer right? You have either purchased a domain name or are using a platform that has given you a subdomain. The domain / subdomain very plainly says who you are or what you offer, (personalizedmarketing.info) marketing personalized to you. People come to your site and are immediately given more information about why they should choose you. No or you’re not sure? Well then maybe it’s time to reconsider your site.

Since we have worked with several authors, we are going to use them as a reference. When you go to an author’s website, the first thing you expect to see is what new book they have out, then their banner, author picture or another relevant image that connects them to their work. Third, you expect to see some information about what type of books they write and a welcome message from them. Some chose to have blog feeds on their homepage others their most recent releases. Both of these work, it just depends on who the author is and what they feel is most relevant to them.

You might then find some information about what events they are attending and how to enter either giveaways, newsletters, or contest. Then at the bottom, you should always find copyright information protecting the material on their website. Ultimately, the homepage is a landing page that should engage us enough to continue through to different pages. The top general pages often include: Home, About or Bio, Books, Reviews/Interviews/Guest Events, Blog and Contact. Sometimes you see other items like friends or reader areas. The main pages gives us yet again the Who, Why, When, Where, and How of the author and their site.

  • Who – are they?
  • Why – read / follow them?
  • When – new book releases and events?
  • Where – can you find them, their books, events attending or hosting, navigate them on the web and in person?
  • How – to contact them, buy their books, keep up with their news, visit them either online or in person, become a bigger fan?

These 5 questions are some of the most important questions that the author’s website should address but it must do it in a manner that is appropriate to the content and the devices viewing it. Have you noticed that when you view the product information for an item on Amazon, the word count is higher for a Computer but significantly less for a phone? That is because there is only a certain amount of room before the phone user has to scroll to read more. This area is considered HIGH value and only really great “HOOKS” should go there. The same is said for your website. If you do not address these questions before a person has to start scrolling than most likely they are not going to stick around long enough to hunt the answers.

Responsive?

So your content looks stunning on your computer but when you visit your site on your phone or tablet you suddenly go “huh, why do I have to scroll left or right?” “What happened to my color choices?” “Where did my images go?” “What’s up with the navigation link?” or the ultimate … “That looks nothing like my website!” Many don’t know but WordPress Themes and some plugins do offer mobile versions of the website, however they are basic mobile templates and probably have very little to do with your design. Some of these basic templates allow adjusting and others require a paid service to do the adjustments. The best way to know if your website looks right on mobile devices is to view it on one. The emulator inside of WordPress customizer does not always give an accurate view and you could find yourself with a mess.

If using WordPress choose the right theme to start with. Make sure it is responsive, parallax and has good reviews as well as support services. You can also have someone design a theme or create a child theme for you, just make sure that it includes a clean and clearly beautiful version of your site on any device. HTML5, CSS, Bootstrap websites also can be very lovely and can be designed to be responsive as well. You only have to make sure the right coding is being used and do not use programs that add outdated or heavy code to your site.

In our final week, we will cover social networks and blog sites. I know we these blogs are giving you quite a lot of content to read and several things to consider. We are here to help; we have several service packages that are tailored to what YOU the client needs based on YOU alone.

If you have a suggestion for a topic then please send us an email, we may chose to do a series about it.

Choosing the right hosting provider and level of hosting is very much dependent on you. If your site has a lot of traffic or you have more than one site, then you are going to want hosting services that have those allocated. If you have a small singular website and do not intend on increasing your traffic, then you can go with a smaller package. The level of bandwidth, site size and traffic you expect all play a role in which package you should consider. A few other things to consider are the SSL Certificate, Firewall (DDoS), CDN and Domain Name Email options. Almost all hosting providers offer a package that has Domain Name Emails, some form of SSL certificate and some even have the Firewall and CDN added. Compare the pricing for each of the items you need, then compare hosting package options and finally decide which is in your budget and time. Hosting packages for $4.95 are great, but if you have to spend another $60.00 a year on an SSL, then $20.00 a month and higher on a Firewall and CDN, plus another $5.00 to $25.00 a month for Domain Name Emails, the cost can add up fairly quick.

Item Item Cost  | Term Total
Hosting 4.95 * 12 Months + 59.40
SSL Yearly + 60.00
Firewall / CDN (Per Domain) 20.00 * 12 Months + 240.00
Domain Name Email 5.00 * 12 Months + 60.00
  Total For 1 Year $419.40

As you can see that $4.95 hosting package without any additional features went from a little under $60.00 a year to $419.40. Start with a hosting package that at the very least offers Domain Name Email services, which then drops the cost down to $359.40.

Still kind of steep, huh? I agree!

So being the type of company we are, I spent several hours scouring the internet for the best deals around. Our own reseller hosting company offers Domain Name Email service and Premium DNS, SSL Certificate with Fixed IP address with a year’s hosting on the Ultimate Package $16.99/month or $204.00 / year. An affiliate of ours, Siteground has a GoGeek Plan also offers a similar package as well but they have included Firewall and CDN in theirs with some additional staging features. The cost is significantly different though $29.95 / month or $359.40 / year after discount pricing, which is currently $11.95 / month or $143.40 / year. As you can see, the hosting packages that include these additional features already have them added to it.

Another affiliate is DreamHost which has some additional hosting options including Virtual Private Server, which if you are looking for less shared “communication traffic” then it might be the choice for you. Shared hosting, managed hosting, WordPress hosting and Virtual Private Servers all offer different benefits for various users and depending on what your current and future goals are, you will want to choose somewhere that can and will grow with you.

There are of course other hosting options out there and once again, choosing the right one is solely based on your wants and needs. Time To Discuss Your Web Presence Series 1

We have created a special four part series of blogs to help give you some basics for your website and to ensure your web presence is what you wanted

These blogs will be posted weekly instead of bi-weekly.

So you have done the hard work. You have started planning, preparing, and scheduling your marketing post, have you stopped to take a look at where you are sending your followers. Are you sending them to your personal website? Maybe your social networks sites, such as Facebook or Twitter? When they get there what do they see? Are they finding a beautiful page about you and your product or are they getting an insecure error, scripts of coding displaying, blurry media files or not able to even access your site? Perhaps they are even looking at your site on a mobile device and it does not look like you expected?

It’s time to evaluate, probably update and ensure that your web presence is the way it should be.

 website security, Personalized Marketing Inc

SSL Certificates

Now this may seem like we are putting the cart before the horse; however, due to changes in popular browsers, SSL certificates are something no website can go without. So instead of starting with hosting or web design we are starting with security first.

I recently had a client call me concerned because she got a call about renewing her SSL certificates and the cost quoted was not cheap by any means. We do provide hosting services for this particular client so I went in to her account and checked; yes she was due to renew. However, she had more options than the person on the phone was giving her. We value being transparent for those we work with, so I gave her price quotes of not just what we could offer but others as well. I also offered installation of the SSL certificates no matter where she purchased them from. Why? Because that is the type of company we are. We look out for our clients even the ones we do not directly deal with on a daily basis.

Why do we even offer to install SSL certificates? Well for a couple reasons really. First reason is, we have the knowhow and yet again we are a transparent company. This means we try to do our very best for our clients. Second reason is because we know that your time is valuable. Not everyone wants to deal with CSRs, Validation Steps, checking links and ultimately we are asked to do it. We do charge for the installation process but we offer it at a reasonable rate and generally can have it completed within a couple hours. Our SSL certificates and any other 3rd party sellers do require a couple things, cPanel access and ability to install. Before purchasing any SSL certificate you need to ensure that both of these things are available.

Firewalls and CDN

Another topic that has come up a lot recently are Firewalls (DDoS) and CDN. Firewalls are the protection used to help stop attackers from accessing your site by ‘bouncing’ them off either your hosting account or your domain name site, depending on which type you have. Firewalls can be purchased through either the hosting account or a 3rd party location, such as Securi.

CDN or Content Delivery Network is a backup of your website on several different servers that helps to prevent loss of downtime and while increasing site speed. Essentially, the CDN places a copy of your website on different servers around the globe and when a visitor comes to your site, they are displayed a cache of the site from a server located near them. This helps to speed up your sites time by two methods; first by using cache versions of the site. Secondly, by visitors accessing your site from a server located near them (less distance for the network handshaking to travel).

Being secure is not only beneficial to you but also to your visitors. Ensuring that their information and devices are being protected helps to build a trust between you and them.

Next week we will go over hosting options. I know we have given you quite a lot of content to read and several things to consider. We are here to help; we have several service packages that are tailored to what YOU the client needs based on YOU alone.

If you have a suggestion for a topic then please send us an email, we may chose to do a series about it.
